Curriculum

KwaThintwa follows the mainstream CAPS curriculum and our learners take South African Sign Language (SASL) as their Home Language and English First Additional Language (FAL). The medium of instruction at the school is SASL.

Our learners have two choices for their FET phase, they can either go to matric or take our Prevocational Skills programme. However, every effort is made to promote the academic programmes.

We offer Hospitality Studies, Dramatic Arts, Visual Art, English FAL, Life Orientation, Maths Literacy and SASL Home Language at FET level.

In our skills programme, our learners take Life Orientation, Woodwork, Creative Arts, Hairdressing, Communication Skills, Functional Maths and Cookery.

Our Achievements

We take incredible pride in the achievements of our learners and our school, particularly when heeding the disadvantages that many of our learners face, yet they endure and produce excellent results. We continue to pride ourselves in eight consecutive years of 100% pass rates. Our academic achievements include all our learners in 2018 receiving A’s for their Art and Drama practical examinations where the lowest Art practical examination mark was 90%. Our 2018 DUX, Thabile Qondani, was placed second in South Africa for SASL Home Language and is the first deaf individual to study law in KwaZulu Natal. Our sporting takes KwaThintwa across the country and constantly brings home a multitude of medals due to the hard work everyone puts in. We understand that there are many challenges faced by Deaf individuals and take pride in our achievements despite these challenges.
